Detailed Itinerary
29 Nov
Willkommen in Deutschland!
Arrive at Berlin Airport all set for our spectacular tour of Germany’s Christmas markets and towns.
If you arrive by 11am, meet up with our tour host and the rest of our group at the airport. From here, we’ll be transported to Potsdam, ready to explore.
If you’re already in Berlin or arrive later, make your own way to Potsdam using a taxi or Uber to join us. Instructions will be given.
On arrival in Potsdam, we’ll see the top sites including the magnificent (and UNESCO World Heritage listed) Sanssouci Park and the Dutch Quarter with a quick introduction tour.

We’ll then check into our hotel, and you’ll have the rest of the day free to enjoy as you acclimatize.
You can take some time to nap or freshen up. Or you can wander around Potsdam’s Old Town and look inside Sanssouci Palace.
Of course, you can also make the short walk to the Blauer Lichterglanz (Blue Lights) Potsdam Christmas Market. As you sip on a cup of Glühwein (mulled wine) with a German Christmas cookie, you’ll know you’re on your dream Christmas vacation.
Two Nights at Hotel am Jägertor
You’ll love this 4-star hotel is in the center of Potsdam, just a short walk from Park Sanssouci, the Christmas market and opposite the oldest remaining city gate. Over the years, the building has been used as both a nursing home for officers and a guest house/hotel.
If you’re hungry after your journey, you can grab a snack and a drink at the hotel lounge or take a moment in the private garden.
Rooms are clean and comfortable with a complimentary minibar, espresso maker and premium bedding.
This is the perfect place to relax after the journey to Germany and be ready for all the amazing places ahead.
Inclusions: Airport transfer at 11am, orientation tour of Potsdam, Potsdam hotel stay at Hotel am Jägertor.
30 Nov
After a delicious breakfast (included) at our hotel, be ready for a fabulous day exploring Berlin. There is nowhere in the world like this amazing city.
Berlin is just a short drive away, and we’ll soon be meeting with our local Berlin expert who will shows us the main sites of the city as we both use our feet and the bus to explore famous sites such as the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, Potsdam Square, the Reichstag, the Jewish Memorial, East Side Gallery (Berlin Wall), Berlin Cathedral, Museum Island… and so much more! It’s going to be amazing!

We’ll stop for a delicious group welcome lunch (included). Lunch will be fabulous and authentic German food. Of course, you should also try the local beer (included) as we get to know each other.
We can’t leave Berlin without visiting its Christmas Markets. There are over 80 Christmas markets in Berlin alone, and we’ll visit the best one.
You’ll then have the time to explore (and shop!) alone.
In the evening, we’ll return to our hotel in Potsdam.
Inclusions: Breakfast, transport between Potsdam and Berlin and within Berlin, guided tour of Berlin with a local guide, welcome lunch and drink, Potsdam hotel stay at Hotel am Jägertor.
1 Dec
After a final breakfast (included), it’s time to say Auf Wiedersehen to Potsdam as we set off to explore more magical Christmas spots in Germany.
Our first stop today is the enchanted Spree Forest (Spreewald) river canals and villages where we’ll set out on a punt (boat) ride wrapped in blankets. This beautiful area in Germany is known for having more canals than roads and this is the perfect way to see the forest, farms and gorgeous scenery. Unfortunately, this is not so fun in the rain, so this activity is weather dependent.

We then drive on to wonderful Meissen. Over 1000 years old, we’ll be concentrating on learning more about its world famous porcelain. We’ll take a factory workshop tour for this “white gold”, and perhaps you’ll buy a piece of Meissen to take home.
Finally, we’ll drive on to Dresden where you optionally join the group for dinner. You could also sneak a peak at its famous Christmas markets.
Two Nights at Amedia Plaza
Locations don’t come better than this! Our 4-star hotel is in the center of Dresden within moments from Dresden’s oldest Christmas market and the other main sites and attractions.
The rooms are bright and modern and include coffee/tea making facilities and desk area. There’s also a bar and restaurant if you need anything.
There’s no better place to base ourselves. Our stay here will make exploring Dresden easy.
Inclusions: Breakfast, canal boat ride (weather dependent), Meissen porcelain factory tour, transport between stops mentioned, Dresden hotel stay at Amedia Plaza.
2 Dec
It’s time to explore Dresden with our local city guide after an easy breakfast (included) at our hotel.
Dresden is the perfect place to visit for Baroque beauty, interesting museums and lavish palaces. It’s also home to arguably the oldest Christmas market in the world so our spectacular Germany Christmas markets tour would not be complete without a visit here.
As we learn about Dresden’s past, present and Christmas traditions from our local guide, take note of the sites you want to visit again later – as you’ll have the afternoon free to wander and explore the many amazing places to visit here.

We highly recommend the Historic Green Vault which is home to over 3,000 treasures of the old Saxony Electors. Or you can take a cruise on the Elbe River which flows through the middle of Dresden.
You’ll definitely want to spend some time at the Striezelmarkt, Dresden’s Christmas market that started in 1434. Its name comes from a type of cake sold at the market. Today, it is called Stollen and is a light fruitcake. Make sure you try it!
With over 240 stalls, you’re sure to find some great Christmas gifts as well. You can also head to nearby Prager Straße which is known as a “Christmas mile” of stalls. Here, there is a 15 meter high Christmas tree, Christmas lights, ice skating and a nightly musical show.
Enjoy the lights, tastes and sounds as the day fades into night, and join us for an optional group dinner if you wish at a great local restaurant.
Inclusions: Breakfast, guided tour of Dresden with a local guide, Dresden hotel stay at Amedia Plaza.
3 Dec
After breakfast (included), we’ll be sad to say goodbye to Dresden but that won’t last long as we’ll soon be in Seiffen!
Located in the Ore Mountains near the Czechia border, Seiffen is famous for its woodworks including nutcrackers and toys. With just a couple of thousand of inhabitants, this place feels like a little Christmas village in December.

We’ll visit the Christmas market and enjoy a nutcracker workshop tour. If you want to buy any wooden items when you’re in Germany, now is the time!
Lunch (not included) will be here in Seiffen.
We then have a longer drive onto Bayreuth. Famous for its Baroque architecture, palaces and for being the home of Richard Wagner, you can choose to explore the Christmas market here.
Our hotel is just a short walk from the Christmas market.
One Night at H4 Hotel Residenzschloss
This modern, centrally located hotel makes it super easy for us to have a taste of Bayreuth on this quick, overnight stop. Just 5 minutes walk from Bayreuth’s Christmas market, it’ll be easy to add this market to your list!
Rooms are clean and comfortable and come with everything you need including a coffee/espresso machine. If you just want to relax with a drink, there’s a hotel bar. There’s also a small sauna and gym.
This is the perfect place for our overnight stop so we’re all refreshed and ready for more adventure.
Inclusions: Breakfast, Seiffen nutcracker workshop tour (if available), transport between Dresden, Seiffen and Bayreuth, Bayreuth hotel stay at H4 Hotel Residenzschloss.
4 Dec
After our included breakfast, it’s time to head on to what must be Germany’s most photographed small town – Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
And you’re in for a treat. This incredibly picturesque, medieval town is simply wunderbar in December. You are going to love every moment.

After the morning drive to Rothenburg, our tour host will give us an orientation tour of the town so we’ll know exactly where to head to enjoy what Rothenburg offers.
You can then explore the town at your leisure. Make sure you take a walk around its medieval Town Walls, check out the open-year-round Christmas shop and, of course, visit the Rothenburg Christmas Market.
You’ll want to take a photo of the famous Plönlein scene, and it would be a crime not to try Rothenburg’s signature pastry, the Schneeball. You can find out what used to happen to criminals at the Medieval Crime Museum. Trust me, it’s better to eat the Schneeball!
Join us for an included group dinner to try the delicious local food and then meet us for the Night Watchman Tour (included).
In this tour, we are sent back to medieval times to accompany the Night Watchman as he walks around the town to keep it safe. While we do this, we won’t just learn what this job was like, but he’ll tell us the history of Rothenburg and stories of life back in medieval times. You’ll love this unique and entertaining walking tour.
Two Nights at Hotel Tilman Riemschneider
The perfect way to add even more magic to our Rothenburg stop is at this 4-star hotel. It’s been hosting guests since 1559! So they know what they are doing.
It’s housed in a traditional, 16th-century building in the center of Rothenburg. The best part is that it’s only a minute or two walk from Marktplatz, home to its Christmas market.
The rooms are clean and comfortable with traditional, handpainted furniture as well as modern fixtures such as a hairdryer and TV. There’s a restaurant on-site serving local food and beer.
Inclusions: Breakfast, transport between Bayreuth and Rothenburg, Rothenburg orientation tour, dinner and drink, Rothenburg Nightwatchman tour, Rothenburg hotel stay at Hotel Tilman Riemschneider.
5 Dec
Get ready to pull yourself away from Rothenburg. After our included breakfast, we are heading to amazing Nuremberg for the day.
Have your walking shoes on as we will be seeing and experiencing a lot today!
Once in Nuremberg, we’ll meet our local guide for a tour exploring the Old Town center, the Imperial Castle and the world famous Christmas Market.
This colorful Old Town is full of amazing sites, churches and underground adventure.
Of course, you won’t want to miss Nuremberg’s original Christmas market in Hauptmarket. It’s one of the world’s oldest being first mentioned in 1628. However, it’s suspected that markets were held here for around 100 years before this.
Nuremberg is famous for its gingerbread (lebkuchen), and this is a great time to try some along with a Nürnberger Bratwurst (sausage) and some blueberry Glühwein. In fact, this is all so delicious, we’ve included it in your tour cost.

After our tour, you’re free to spend the afternoon exploring Nuremberg visiting the sites that are of most interest and, of course, shopping at the Christmas market.
We’ll then travel back to Rothenburg with an optional group dinner to finish our stay in this gorgeous town.
Inclusions: Breakfast, transport between Rothenburg and Nuremberg, guided tour of Nuremberg with a local guide, snacks and drink at the Christmas market, Rothenburg hotel stay at Hotel Tilman Riemschneider.
6 Dec
This morning, we’ll make our final journey to Munich after our included breakfast. So be ready to explore this magnificent city!
After a quick check-in at our hotel, we’ll meet our local guide for a walking tour of the famous old town center with an introduction to Munich’s awesome Christmas markets.

We’ll then have a final late lunch together (included) to chat about all the fabulous places and experiences we’ve shared over the last eight days. Of course, no trip to Munich would be complete without trying some of its famous beer.
You’re then free to explore Munich for some final shopping or sightseeing. You could end the day with a drink at the rooftop bar of our hotel, soaking up Munich’s Old Town views.
One Night at Hotel Deutsche Eiche
You’ll love that this hotel is just a short walk from Marienplatz and the center of Munich. With its neoclassical façade dating back to 1864 and modern rooms, it’s a fabulous place to base ourselves.
The rooms come with comfortable bedding, complimentary minibar and a desk area. There’s also a restaurant on-site with traditional Bavarian dishes as well as contemporary twists on traditional cuisine.
My favorite part is the rooftop bar with views over Munich’s Old Town. It’s covered, partially heated and perfect for a sunset drink. I’m sure I’ll be having one!
It’s the perfect place to finish our spectacular Christmas markets tour.
Inclusions: Breakfast, transport between Rothenburg and Munich, guided tour of Munich with a local guide, goodbye lunch and drink, Munich hotel stay at Hotel Deutsche Eiche.
7 Dec
On our final day, you’ll wake up in Munich ready to head back home or onto your next adventure with all the memories and amazing souvenirs from your time in Germany.
Breakfast is included and you can take a taxi, Uber or train to the airport at your leisure. Instructions will be given.

I’m Sharon Gourlay, the Australian founder of Germany Footsteps. I love Germany and love sharing this love with others.
I’m incredibly excited to travel with you to explore Germany at Christmas time. It’s such a magical place at this time that doesn’t compare to anywhere else.
I’ll be on this tour in addition to our German tour host and local guides to ensure we all have the perfect Christmas adventure.
I can’t wait to meet you and to share this experience with you.
Why You’ll Love Traveling With Us…
We guarantee a premium small group experience with expert guides. You won’t be shuttled around with a big group feeling like you’re on some type of tourist conveyer belt from one place to another. You’ll get to know our German tour host, me and other group members. We’ll enjoy this magical experience together.
There’s a maximum of 12 guests, and we’ll always have our tour host to answer questions or keep us on track. I’ll also be there if you have any problems, questions or just want to chat.
But what really makes this tour so special?
This is a unique experience where you’ll get to see some of the best places in Germany at Christmas time. This itinerary has been expertly crafted to take in some of the most famous Christmas markets while enjoying some smaller, more local ones as well.
In addition to Christmas markets, we’ll see the top attractions along the way and learn more about the history and culture of Germany with expert local guides. We’ll enjoy great local food, drinks and more. This tour isn’t just about Christmas markets, but they are a wonderful focus.
We’ve included a mixture of local guides, activities, included meals as well as free time. Because what’s the point in visiting these great places and Christmas markets if you don’t have the time to enjoy them exactly how you want with all the tools you need to have a great time?
Our small group size means that we can stay in small, atmospheric hotels in the center of towns that bigger tour groups can’t access. We’re in the action so you can easily walk to attractions you want to see again or to buy any Christmas gifts.
We want you to feel as special as Germany’s Christmas markets.
We also focus our overnight stays on smaller places – like Potsdam and Rothenburg. So while you get to see the big cities, we’re staying somewhere gorgeous, more intimate and much more charming.
A small group doesn’t just give us flexibility with accommodation, but the activities we enjoy the way. So we are more able to pivot, for example in the case of bad weather, to ensure we all have a fabulous time.
Nowhere is like Germany at Christmas, and we’re absolutely going to love it.
FAQs
Is this trip right for me?
Are you interested in German culture and history? Do you love Christmas? Are you able to walk for a few hours a day?
Then this tour is right for you 🙂
You also need to be happy spending time outdoors in winter and keeping to a group schedule. There may be crowds at times, especially at the big Christmas markets (like Berlin, Dresden, Nuremberg and Munich) and on weekends.
How active is this tour?
Some walking is included in all our daily activities.
Our included walking tours with local guides last up to 2.5 hours. They will not be particularly strenuous but you need to be happy on your feet for this amount of time to make the most of these tours. After these tours, there is generally free time so you can take it easy for the rest of the visit if you wish.
You also need to be able to transport your own luggage between our minibus and your hotel room. This may involve stairs.
Please email me at [email protected] if you have any concerns.
What is the tour starting point?
This tour starts at Berlin Brandenburg Airport at 11am 29 November.
Ideally, book your flights to arrive on the 29th before this time. Depending on where you are coming from, this usually means departing on the 28th.
We’ll give you a meeting point at the airport to meet your tour host and other guests.
If you arrive later in the day or choose to arrive in Berlin on an earlier date, you can go straight to our hotel in Potsdam, Hotel am Jägertor, and meet us there.
We will give you instructions closer to the departure date.
What is the tour end point?
The tour finishes at the Hotel Deutsche Eiche in Munich on 7 December. Tour activities finish on 6 December, so you can book your flight for any time on this day. Hotel check-out is at 11am.
We will give you instructions for how to get to the airport closer to the tour date.
Can you book my flights?
We cannot book your flights. We recommend Silke from eze2travel if you’re coming from the US. She can also book any other travel services you need (like travel insurance) or if you decide to stay longer in Germany.
Can I join as a solo traveler?
Yes! We love solo travelers. I am one myself 🙂 You do need to pay an extra supplement for your own room.
Can I book for more than two people?
Yes! However, we don’t offer rooms that fit more than two people, and if you have an odd number in your group, a single supplement will apply to one guest.
When filling out the booking form below, you can only book for two guests at a time so you’ll need to fill this in multiple times.
What are the hotels like?
We believe the right hotel makes a huge difference to your experiences when traveling. Rather than look for a certain star rating, we look for hotels that provide excellent accommodation and are in an excellent location for exploring the places we visit. We aim for boutique, atmospheric hotels that enhance your stay rather than big soulless places designed for massive groups.
You’ll be comfortable AND love the experiences you can have from these hotels.
Here are some examples from what we have booked for this tour (and you can read more about all the hotels in the detailed itinerary above):
Potsdam – Hotel Am Jägertor
You will love this 4-star hotel is in the center of Potsdam, just a short walk from Park Sanssouci and opposite the oldest remaining city gate.
Rothenburg – Hotel Tilman Riemenschneider
This traditional, 16th-century, 4-star hotel is just a minute or two walk from Marktplatz, the center of Rothenburg and home to its Christmas market. It’s been a hotel since 1559!
There’s a restaurant on-site serving local food and beer.
The rooms are clean and comfortable with traditional, handpainted furniture as well as modern fixtures such as a hairdryer and TV.
Note that hotels in Europe may be different to what you are used to in your home country. Rooms can be on the small side, and you may need to navigate stairs with your luggage.
Can I request a double or twin room?
Of course, let us know what you would prefer. We will do our best, but cannot guarantee this.
Hotels in Germany often don’t have double beds but two singles beds pushed together with individual duvets.
What transport do we use?
Assuming we have more than six guests, we will travel around Germany in our own 19 seat VIP minibus. It’s comfortable and easy, especially with a maximum group size of 12.
The model is pictured here:

If there are six guests, we will travel in the latest model Renault Trafic 8 seater van.
What is the weather like in Germany at this time?
It will be cold. It will no doubt be wet at times. The majority of activities we will still do, even in the rain. The average temperature in Berlin in December is 32 – 39°F (0-4°C). In Munich, it is 30 – 41°F (-1-5°C).
It’s possible we will experience snow. It’s also possible we won’t.
The Germans have a saying, Es gibt kein schlechtes Wetter, nur schlechte Kleidung. It means there is no bad weather, just bad clothing. So make sure you are prepared and you’ll be fine.
In my experience, it just adds to the magical Christmas feeling especially with a cup of Glühwein (German mulled wine).
How much luggage can I bring?
Less is best! We have a strict limit of one suitcase per person and one small daypack. This means no extra carry-on luggage.
This limit is both for your comfort as well as limitations with storage space in our minibus.
It’s also worth remembering that German hotel rooms are generally smaller than you may be used to. You’ll find your hotel stays more comfortable with less luggage.
You also need to be able to transport your own luggage comfortably between your room and our minibus and that may include some stairs and some walking. So don’t pack more than you can carry either.
You may also want to leave some space in your suitcase as I’m sure you’ll be tempted to do some shopping at the Christmas markets we visit.
What should I pack?
The main thing is to pack appropriate clothing for the winter weather. It will be cold and wet, and it may snow. See what I wrote about the weather in Germany above.
We will send more details to help you pack closer to the departure date.
Do I need to tip?
Tips are common in Germany to show appreciation for good food and friendly service. They are usually less than in the US.
Tips are included in your tour cost for local guides, our bus driver and included meals. A tip is not included for our German tour host and is at your discretion.
For other meals, tips generally average around 10% in restaurants.
Is this tour fully confirmed?
The tour is not fully confirmed until we reach minimum numbers – which is only six passengers. We’ll let you know when we reach this benchmark and recommend you don’t book your flights until then.
Can I pay in a different currency?
In addition to US dollars, you can also pay in Canadian, Australian or New Zealand dollars, British pounds or Euros. We use the current exchange rate on xe.com.
Simply email us at [email protected]
Still have questions?
I’d love to answer them! Simply email me at [email protected]
If you’d like to have a chat before booking, please also email me and we can set a time to talk. I’m happy to answer all your questions.
I also recommend you click here to download detailed tour notes. These have more information about this tour.
