Learning German: German Language Hacks by DW Euromaxx
This video offers German language learning hacks, including tips for guessing article genders, understanding number formation, and using filler words to navigate conversations when struggling.
- Article Gender Hacks: Use “der” for days, months, seasons, directions, and most weather; “die” for feminine nouns and fruits (with exceptions); “das” for colors, letters, and materials. Word endings also offer clues.
- Number Formation: Write numbers with spaces between digits to better understand the German system of combining units, tens, and hundreds. Be aware of Germans switching between single and multiple-digit numbers in speech as well
- Filler Words for Conversations: Use vague terms like “Interessant” (interesting), “Krass” (wow), and varying intonation to appear engaged even when struggling to understand.
- “So” and “Halt”: Incorporate “so” (“like” in English) and “halt” (usually meaning “stop” but can also be a meaningless filler word) to buy yourself thinking time in conversations.
