Looking for a good place to stay in Bremen that’s great value, in a handy spot to the city’s main attractions and is a good standard?

It can feel impossible sometimes to find a decent hotel without spending a fortune where you can walk everywhere you want to go, but that’s what I found at the Best Western Bremen City hotel.

It does come with a caveat though – this hotel is somewhat like two hotels in one. When I was researching where to book in Bremen, I found quite mixed reviews for this hotel and it became obvious when we stayed why.

We had two rooms and one was functional with some drawbacks and one was great and fantastic value. They were in two different parts of the hotel – one of which was a much better standard than the other.

The upside of this is that it does have a great range of room types perfect for those who have kids or also want the option to self cater as well as solo travellers, budget travellers and couples.

It also means that I highly recommend you pay extra for the better room types if you can. There was only a 20 euro difference in the per night cost of our rooms when we stayed and the extra 20 euros made a huge difference.

This hotel is in a great location, handy to explore Bremen.

Keep reading because below, I share everything you need to know about the Best Western hotel Bremen City from what facilities are available to its exact location as well as the two very different standards.

This hotel Best Western Bremen is a midrange 3 star option. Note that on the same street is the 4 star Best Western Hotel zur Post.

These are separate hotels but the Best Western Hotel zur Post is worth considering if you like the sound of this hotel but would prefer something a little nicer (and are happy to pay more). You can find more information on the Best Western Hotel zur Post here.

Location

The hotel Best Western Bremen City is in a great location between the Old Town and the main train station. It’s just a three minute walk from the station and just seven minutes to the main square. There’s parking nearby.

On the street around the hotel are handy shops and eating options. It’s a great spot.

Rooms

One of the plusses of this Best Western hotel in Bremen is that there are a range of room types. These include singles, doubles and a business apartment which can sleep up to four and is basically a one bedroom apartment.

The singles and doubles come in a few different classes of economy, standard and comfort.

All rooms come with private bathroom, wifi, flat-screen TV and tea and coffee making facilities (although in our single room, this was just two tea bags). They also have a desk area. There is heating but no air conditioning.

There were signs in our rooms that they were only serviced every three days but they did service (but not clean) them daily.

The less you pay, the less space you’ll get. What is awesome is that the comfort options are also apartment-style and come with kitchenette, perfect for self-caterers or if you want more space.

The business apartment is the best option and detailed more below.

Unfortunately for us, no rooms fit a family of five. On the upside for you is that this means we tried both a single room and a business apartment when we stayed here so can report in depth on both!

This turned out to be very interesting as, like I said above, this hotel is kind of like two hotels in one with very different parts of the hotel and very different standards.

Business Apartment

The business apartment is a one-bedroom apartment style option with a kitchen with oven and stove (but no microwave), living room and a dining table with chairs. There’s also a separate bedroom and bathroom.

The living room has a sofa bed which can sleep an extra two people. The kitchen had a small fridge and dishwasher.

Our apartment was very spacious – much more so than the photos make it look – and the kitchen had everything we needed. The apartment was located at the back of the building and was very quiet. Only slight noises from the street could be heard.

It’s a comfortable apartment that’s great for a family or a couple wanting more space and to self-cater. It’s well equipped and furnished although our living room was so big that it looked a bit bare. There is plenty of storage.

There was shower gel and hand soap in dispensers in the bathroom.

The curtains were great – thick and blocked the light. That sounds obvious but that has been rare during our current trip.

Economy Single Room

We also stayed in an economy single room. This room was a standard hotel room on the surface but actually it was lacking when I looked closer.

There was a single bed, desk, kettle with tea (but not coffee) making, a bottle of water, closet, coat hooks and a suitcase stand. There’s also a small bathroom.

What was disappointing is that the mini fridge wasn’t plugged in and there was no way to do this so I couldn’t use it. Even more frustrating was the soap and shower gel containers in the bathroom were empty.

With all the talk of being covid safe in the hotel, it seemed extra ridiculous that I couldn’t even have soap to clean my hands.

Worse was when I had a shower and there were hairs on the walls of the shower. Then the water filled up in the bottom quickly and I realised the drain was completely blocked by hairs and other things. Gross. I didn’t want to shower in there again.

The room was by the street despite my request for a quiet room and a long way from our business apartment. It was very noisy. It was summer when I stayed but cool weather and I thankfully was able to shut the window at night which cut out most of the noise.

If it had been a little hotter, it would have been too hot to sleep and then I would have had the choice of overheating or not sleeping due to noise. The hotel is on a busy street with trams between the train station and towns.

On the upside, the room was quite comfortable. I enjoyed sitting at my desk writing this and my bed was comfortable. With the window shut and with the thick curtains, I had a great night’s sleep.

It’s a shame they couldn’t at least clean the shower, turn on the fridge and give me some soap. I probably would have thought this hotel was incredibly good value had they done those things.

The craziest part of our experience of the two rooms is that actually the business apartment was only 20 euros more per night than the economy single when we stayed.

Facilities

Where the Best Western Hotel City Bremen loses some points is with facilities as there isn’t a ton. However, for the price, this is to be expected.

A buffet breakfast is available every morning for a fair price. Wifi is free. There are two elevators.

While there isn’t parking on-site, they have a deal with a neighbouring parking garage. When we visited, this was Contipark Parkhaus Hillmannplatz which is only a couple of minute’s walk away and cost supposedly 9 euros for 24 hours.

Unfortunately, the discount ticket they gave for this caused us issues as they must have programmed it for our entire stay and not just per day so when we got our car out during our stay, it was more expensive to use the discount than just pay the standard rate of 13 euros a day with 18 euros coming up. They need to sort this out or at least ask you if you’ll be using your car during the stay.

Then when we asked for another discount when we left, that came up as being 10 euros a day instead of the 9. Just a small amount but it added to my growing frustration.

The wifi was very good.

Dining

There is no dining on-site apart from breakfast. However, there are plenty of options nearby with a range of eat-in and take away options surrounding the hotel.

There is a drink and snacks vending machine at reception at this Best Western in Bremen.

Final Words

The Best Western City hotel Bremen is a solid choice when you are looking for great value at a great price for a family. The business apartments are great. While it will never win the “best hotel in Bremen” prize, it’s a great midrange option in a handy location. At least for the business apartments. Otherwise, it slides clearly into the budget category while not costing much less.

It’s especially a good choice if you are looking for a hotel where you can also self-cater. We were able to self-cater most meals while staying here easily and enjoyed this hotel.

It’s less great if you want an economy room. However, as long as you are aware of the limitations – like no soap or fridge and possibly a fair bit of noise, it’s fine
